A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 has struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggering a potentially destructive tsunami. The epicenter was located approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Nias Island and occurred at a depth of 20 kilometers.
According to preliminary reports, the quake has caused widespread damage in coastal areas of Nias Island and neighboring Simeulue Island. Buildings have collapsed, and many people have been injured or displaced.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India, and other countries in the Indian Ocean region. Authorities are urging residents in these areas to evacuate immediately and seek higher ground.
